This year the holidays are more important than ever, and most of us can’t wait to put 2020 behind us. This past year has changed the world, and as we adapt, many of us are finding new traditions. Instead of the traditional party, we will be bringing in the new year with those closest to us. While we have spent most of the year within the same house, you may find yourself worn down and ready for a change of pace.
Take this New Years’ Eve to really refocus yourself from the past 365 and bid the blights of 2020 goodbye. This year might leave you stuck with what to do without the big parties, without having all of your friends and family over. We came up with these 10 awesome ideas for you to ring in the new year with. So grab a cocktail and read on.
1. Decorate the house.
We know you’ve spent most of the year staring at the same 4 walls. That’s why with some cheap dollar store items, you can liven up the house. Use a tablecloth as a backdrop, get some balloons for the kids. Some fancy drinkware for the evening. Not only will it boost moods, but it will give your family some great photo opportunities or even a new Zoom background for all those boring meetings.
2. Write down your resolutions.
Or maybe even just some goals for the following year. The younger members of the household could write a list of things they wish to learn. Writing them down together as a family can help strengthen your likelihood of following through. It also gives you something to look at as the year rolls by as a reminder of what you wanted to accomplish.
3. Play a game.
Games are always fun. Whether it’s trivia or Monopoly, it’s a great way to pass the time as you wait for the countdown. Or even better, make up a new game. You don’t need much. Some dice or cards and some paper to keep score with is all you need.
4. Make a cocktail!
2020 has been a rough year. You might as well bring in 2021 with a drink. After all, you don’t have to worry about driving home. It’s been a long year, and making cocktails can be fun. You don’t even need all the fancy equipment. Some cocktails only take a few moments to make and taste great.

5. Make some snacks.
Do you know what goes great with a drink? Some awesome snacks or a charcuterie board. Instead of making a big meal for dinner, go lighter, and have fun in the kitchen, making all the sides and little bite-sized snacks you want. Chips with dip and mini tacos?! Sure! Message your family members and remake their signature dish. It will feel almost like they were there, with only your favorite things.
6. Make a Grateful Jar or a Memory Jar.
Get a mason jar or any old pasta sauce jar and have everyone in the house write down on slips of paper their favorite memory or the things they are most grateful for over this past year. As the New Year of 2021 rolls in, read all of the slips one at a time out loud to start the year off on a positive foot, and reflect on the good things around you. It’s sure to bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart.
7. Watch a movie.
Another great way to pass the hours as we wind down into a new year is to put a movie on. Find an old classic or rent a new movie on a streaming platform. This is where those plates of snacks will come in handy.

8. Dress Up.
While most of the year we have been at home half-dressed for Zoom meetings, take a moment to dress up. It doesn’t have to be a nice fancy outfit. Put together something fun. Even better, coordinate a video call with all those friends and family you’ve been missing and get them to partake. It’s like an ugly Christmas sweater contest but New Year’s Eve version. Let the kids dress up in costumes or PJs.
9. Watch Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve.
Is it really New Year’s Eve without watching the ball drop in Times Square? While the in-person event is canceled, the show will go on. This year you can join Ryan Seacrest count down until the iconic ball drop with various celebrity guests joining him throughout the day.
“The world desperately needs to come together symbolically and virtually to celebrate the people and things we love and to look forward with a sense of renewal and new beginnings,” Tim Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance, said in a press release about the event.
10. Toast the new year.
No matter what diet you plan on starting next year, if you’re vegan or just enjoying life, there’s a flavor for you to bring in the new year with. From Sparkling cider and bubbly canned cocktails or even just good old crisp water, you’ll want to bring in the New Year with a toast. At the very least, celebrate that you survived the craziness that has been 2020 and welcome in a new fresh start of 2021.
